To Proctor or Not to Proctor...?

The recent NDUSO fall conference got some thinking about how proctoring is done for NDSCS online courses. At this time, the instructor determines whether to proctor or not, and how often. There are some instructors who wish to have every quiz and exam proctored. Our office recommends proctoring for major exams, such as midterms and finals.

Also, there are some inconsistencies in how instructors work with proctors. Some notify the proctors of upcoming exams. Some require passwords. Then there are questions as to whether instructors should follow-up with proctors to verify that the students are actually taking the exam. Should online exams follow the same guidelines as the campus?

We are starting the new year with a task force to create a proctor policy for the entire campus to follow. I would like to hear from all of you as to the practice your campus follows for proctoring. Jane shared in our breakout session of their practice in verifying proctors and validating email addresses. Very good info! I hope you will share it again with this group.

The recent Distance Ed Report included articles addressing online proctoring. Has any ND campuses adopted an online proctoring system, such as Web Assessor?

I look forward to hearing from you!
